Opening a Cello…

Did you know? Violin family instruments are designed to be taken apart for repair. This is what it looks like…

This modern Chinese factory-made cello had a cracked back and needed repair. In addition to the repair, this cello received adjustments to the bass bar, graduations (thicknesses) of the top and back, and general shaping of the interior parts to create conditions for the best possible sound quality. This instrument had been made in a factory setting, where speed—rather than quality—was the main priority. While the top was off the cello, Rachael did the fine finish-work that a master-maker does when building an instrument, resulting in transforming an inexpensive factory-instrument into a good sounding cello that the client really enjoys playing.
